Design Story

“Otani Oniji III as Edohei” is one of the most iconic works by Toshusai Sharaku, a mysterious Japanese ukiyo-e artist active for only about ten months during the Edo period (1794–1795).

The print portrays the kabuki actor Otani Oniji III in the role of Edohei, a servant character known for his exaggerated facial expression and dynamic gesture.

Sharaku’s bold depiction of human emotion—especially the intense expression of the hands and face—was revolutionary for its time and remains one of the most recognized images in all of Japanese art.

Today, this portrait is celebrated worldwide as a masterpiece that captures the power and drama of Edo-period kabuki theater.
