Yame Hoshino Gyokuro
YAME GYOKURO YAYOI
YAYOI is a premium Gyokuro from Hoshino Village in Yame, one of Japan’s most respected regions for shaded green tea. It offers deep umami, soft sweetness, and a smooth finish that makes Gyokuro feel truly special.
A Smooth Introduction to Yame Gyokuro
Gyokuro is one of Japan’s most luxurious green teas. Unlike regular sencha, Gyokuro is shaded before harvest, which helps create a richer umami taste and a softer, sweeter mouthfeel.
YAYOI is a refined choice for customers who want to experience authentic Yame Gyokuro without starting from the highest grade. It is smooth, elegant, and ideal for slow tasting.
Tasting Profile
- Deep umami with soft sweetness
- Smooth and gentle mouthfeel
- Low bitterness and low astringency
- Rich shaded-tea aroma
- Best enjoyed slowly at lower temperature
Which Size Should You Choose?
Recommended for first-time Gyokuro customers who want to experience the difference between sencha and shaded tea.
Best for customers who already enjoy Japanese tea and want to make Gyokuro part of their regular tea time.
How to Brew Gyokuro
Gyokuro is best brewed slowly with lower-temperature water. This helps bring out its deep umami, soft sweetness, and smooth texture.
Use about 6g of Gyokuro leaves, roughly 3 teaspoons, in a small teapot.
Pour water cooled to about 50–60°C / 122–140°F and steep for about 2 minutes.
Pour little by little into the cup to enjoy the concentrated umami and aroma.
Gyokuro can also be brewed cold for a sweeter, softer taste.
What is Gyokuro?
Gyokuro is considered one of the finest types of Japanese green tea. In Japan, it is often associated with special occasions, important guests, and quiet moments of appreciation.
Its luxury comes from the way it is cultivated. Before harvest, the tea plants are shaded from sunlight for a period of time. This helps preserve theanine, an amino acid associated with umami and sweetness, while reducing sharp bitterness.
Yame Hoshino: A Famous Region for Gyokuro
Yame, especially Hoshino Village, is widely known in Japan for high-quality Gyokuro. The region’s mountain climate, temperature differences, and frequent mist help create ideal conditions for shaded tea cultivation.
The result is a tea with a deep green color, rich umami, and a smooth, elegant taste.
Sencha vs. Gyokuro: What’s the Difference?
The biggest difference between sencha and gyokuro is how the tea leaves are grown. Gyokuro is shaded before harvest, which creates deeper umami and smoother sweetness. Sencha is grown with more sunlight, giving it a brighter aroma and a refreshing balance.
You want a refreshing Japanese green tea that is easy to enjoy every day. Sencha is clean, aromatic, and versatile.
You want deeper umami, a smoother mouthfeel, and a more luxurious tea experience. Gyokuro is best enjoyed slowly.
