Shaped by a rare coastal climate

The San'in coast brings colder winters and less sunlight than many famous tea regions. This unique environment gives Izumo matcha a mellow aroma, smooth umami, and a clean, low-bitterness finish.

About Izumo Matcha

Izumo sits in Shimane Prefecture, on Japan’s Sea of Japan coast in the San’in region — one of the country’s lesser-known tea-growing areas. The tea garden behind MatchaJP’s Izumo matcha has cultivated tea in Shimane for more than a century, and its modern processing company, IZUMO SEICHA, was established in 2006 to continue that work on a small, hands-on scale.

What sets Izumo matcha apart is its climate. Colder winters and noticeably fewer sunlight hours than southern regions such as Kagoshima are unusual conditions for Japanese tea. The reduced sun and careful, small-batch processing produce a mellow aroma, a smooth low-bitterness cup, and a deep green color.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Izumo matcha and where does it come from?
Izumo matcha comes from Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, on Japan’s Sea of Japan coast. It is grown and processed by IZUMO SEICHA, a small-scale producer whose tea garden has been cultivating tea in the region for more than a century.
What makes Izumo matcha different from Uji or Yame matcha?
Izumo’s San’in coast climate brings colder winters and notably less annual sunlight than southern tea regions. This produces matcha with a mellow, clean aroma, smooth low-bitterness umami, and a quieter profile than the layered elegance of Uji or the bold nuttiness of Yame.
Which Izumo matcha grade should I start with?
KAMI-WATASHI is the easiest starting point — a balanced, regular-grade matcha with a clean, refreshing flavor. If you prefer a bolder matcha for lattes or recipes, TAISYA is also a good choice.
Is Izumo matcha good for lattes?
Yes. TAISYA is especially useful for lattes and recipes thanks to its stronger profile, while KAMI-WATASHI makes a smooth daily latte. KAGURA is best for a more premium latte or usucha.
