Why choose IMPERIAL?

A new pinnacle for MEIYO

Positioned above Nyufune-no-Kaze, IMPERIAL is the most distinguished matcha in this collection.

Recognized in Japan

The IMPERIAL can is marked “Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award-winning tea” — a meaningful distinction for those exploring exceptional Japanese tea.

Beautiful as koicha

Its deep body and low bitterness make IMPERIAL an excellent choice for thick matcha. Enjoy its rich character slowly, without milk or sweetener.

A memorable gift

A special choice for a matcha enthusiast, a tea ceremony practitioner, or an occasion worth marking.

The award distinction

Award-Winning Tea The Japanese text on the IMPERIAL package identifies it as 農林水産大臣賞受賞茶 — tea awarded the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award.

Flavor profile

IMPERIAL brings together a rich green color, deep body and very little bitterness. Its satisfying depth is especially compelling as koicha (thick matcha), while usucha offers another way to appreciate its character.

Best enjoyed: Prepare it plain as koicha when you want to experience the full depth of this exceptional matcha.

How to prepare

Usucha (thin tea)

Sift about 2 g into a bowl. Add 60–80 ml of water at approximately 70–80°C and whisk until smooth.

Koicha (thick tea)

Sift about 4 g. Add 30–40 ml of water at approximately 70–75°C a little at a time, then knead slowly with a chasen until glossy and smooth. Do not whisk for foam.

Serve simply

Try it plain first to experience its aroma and finish without other ingredients.

Preparation amounts are a starting point; adjust to taste.

Which MEIYO matcha should I choose?

IMPERIAL

The top tier of the collection. Award-winning tea with rich green color, deep body and low bitterness; exceptional for koicha.

Nyufune-no-Kaze

Tea ceremony and koicha oriented. Clean umami and very low bitterness.

Asahina-no-Yuki

Smooth, clean everyday ceremonial matcha; also suitable for lattes.

Aobane-no-Tsuki

An approachable daily matcha with more umami than Okabe-no-Hana; well suited to lattes.

Okabe-no-Hana

The most accessible price point in the MEIYO range; an easy choice for lattes.

About MEIYO

MEIYO is a Japanese matcha producer based in Shizuoka Prefecture. Across the collection, each tea offers a different way to enjoy matcha — from everyday bowls and lattes to traditional tea preparation. IMPERIAL takes its place at the very top of that range.

FAQ

How is IMPERIAL different from Nyufune-no-Kaze?

IMPERIAL is positioned one tier above Nyufune-no-Kaze and is presented as award-winning tea. Nyufune-no-Kaze remains the known choice for clean umami, very low bitterness and koicha. IMPERIAL offers deep body, low bitterness and a rich green color, and is exceptional as koicha.

Can I prepare IMPERIAL as koicha?

Yes. Its deep body and low bitterness make it an excellent choice for koicha. Sift well, add water gradually and knead slowly rather than whisking for foam.

What does the award wording mean?

The package says 農林水産大臣賞受賞茶, meaning tea awarded the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award.

Is IMPERIAL best for lattes?

We suggest tasting IMPERIAL plain first. If you mainly make lattes, Asahina-no-Yuki, Aobane-no-Tsuki or Okabe-no-Hana are other options in the MEIYO range.

How should I store it?

Keep sealed, away from heat, light and moisture. After opening, use promptly for the best aroma.
