About Yamamasa Koyamaen

Yamamasa Koyamaen in Uji Kyoto

Yamamasa Koyamaen is a long-established matcha producer in Uji, Kyoto. The brand is trusted for consistent quality, refined tea-making, and a wide range of matcha for tea ceremony, daily drinking, and culinary use.

Why Uji Matcha?

Uji tea fields in Kyoto

Uji is one of Japan’s most respected tea regions. Its climate, soil, shading methods, and tea-processing traditions help create matcha with clean aroma, balanced taste, and vivid green color.

Stone-Milled Craftsmanship

Traditional stone mill matcha production

Traditional stone milling produces a fine powder with a smooth texture. This careful process is one reason Japanese matcha feels soft on the tongue and blends beautifully with water or milk.

About Matcha Lumps

Using a matcha sieve

Small clumps can appear naturally because matcha is very fine and sensitive to static electricity and humidity. For a smoother bowl or latte, sift the powder before whisking.

When I first opened the package, I smell a nutty flavor, strong and to me that’s a good head start. Secondly I did the usual and I tasted the Matcha without milk at first and it was strong. I love that it was strong a little bitterness and it was good and then I tried with just oat milk no sweetener and it was good. And then I tried it with oat milk and brown sugar syrup and it was delicious. I love how dark of the green was. I prefer my Matcha to be very dark and it was very delicious. Overall a 10 out of 10 will buy again!!

This matcha tasted very bold and packed quite a punch. It leans more bitter, so it pairs perfectly with oat milk.

The bitterness has an appealing quality, with some savory, seedy and nutty notes coming through as well. It wasn’t overly seaweedy, which I appreciated. The color was a beautiful, vibrant green and not dull whatsoever, as expected from this brand.

One thing I noticed was that the matcha powder itself is quite coarse, especially compared to other matchas in a similar price range (Hekisuien Chiyo no Sakae)

With oat milk, the bitterness is toned down considerably, while most of the other flavors still come through nicely. For the price, this matcha is a very good choice for people who enjoy strong matchas.

It’s a good entry matcha for those wanting to get into matcha not as strong as I’d like but still good

Matsukaze is my first matcha product and I love the flavor. It is very creamy when drank with oat milk. However, the matcha flavor can be easily washed out if there is too much milk or depending on the milk, so more quantity of the matcha is required. Overall, highly recommend for beginners to try with oat milk.

This matcha wasn’t my fav but I’m happy I tried it. I wouldn’t get it again. The colour and smell were very good, just wasn’t deep or bold enough for me.
