About Yamamasa Koyamaen

Yamamasa Koyamaen in Uji Kyoto

Yamamasa Koyamaen is a long-established matcha producer in Uji, Kyoto. The brand is trusted for consistent quality, refined tea-making, and a wide range of matcha for tea ceremony, daily drinking, and culinary use.

Why Uji Matcha?

Uji tea fields in Kyoto

Uji is one of Japan’s most respected tea regions. Its climate, soil, shading methods, and tea-processing traditions help create matcha with clean aroma, balanced taste, and vivid green color.

Stone-Milled Craftsmanship

Traditional stone mill matcha production

Traditional stone milling produces a fine powder with a smooth texture. This careful process is one reason Japanese matcha feels soft on the tongue and blends beautifully with water or milk.

About Matcha Lumps

Using a matcha sieve

Small clumps can appear naturally because matcha is very fine and sensitive to static electricity and humidity. For a smoother bowl or latte, sift the powder before whisking.

How to Store Matcha

Matcha is sensitive to air, light, heat, and moisture. Keep it tightly sealed after opening and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. For the best flavor and aroma, enjoy it soon after opening.

For smoother preparation, always use a dry spoon and sift the matcha before whisking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. YOMO-NO-KAORI is especially recommended for usucha because its aroma, umami, smooth sweetness, and refreshing finish are easy to appreciate with hot water alone.

How is it different from SAMIDORI?

Compared with SAMIDORI, YOMO-NO-KAORI has more umami and a more refined taste while keeping bitterness low.

Can I use it for matcha lattes?

Yes. It can be used for high-end matcha lattes, but its character is more strongly suited to traditional usucha than everyday latte use.

Is it good for beginners?

Yes, especially for beginners who want a smoother and more refined matcha with low bitterness. It is a natural upgrade from entry-level Koyamaen matcha.

How should I prepare it?

For usucha, sift 1.5–2g of matcha, add hot water around 70–80°C / 158–176°F, and whisk until smooth.

How should I store matcha?

Keep the container tightly sealed and store it away from light, heat, humidity, and moisture. For the best flavor, consume soon after opening.

Natural matcha color, aroma, and flavor may vary slightly depending on the harvest season and production lot.

Customers praised this ceremonial matcha for its smooth, naturally sweet flavor with umami and subtle chocolate notes. Many said it "pairs perfectly with oat milk" and has a "beautiful green" color. While most found it delicious and cafe-quality, some noted slight bitterness or that the light flavor requires more powder for regular drinkers.

"I went in looking for some good matcha and stumbled upon this brand I’d never tried before. I decided to take a gamble on the Yomo no Kaori, and wow—I’m so impressed! I brewed it as a latte with oat milk and didn't even need to add syrup. The natural sweetness of the tea is incredible, and it’s so creamy and smooth. It pairs perfectly with oat milk. Highly recommended!"

The price isn't too bad for the amount since there is a matcha shortage. The description said this matcha is great for an usucha, and I think that's true. When I tasted it, I felt that it was pretty light. I personally like matchas from Kagoshima and Yame, but this was still good from a person that usually don't buy Uji matchas.

The matcha overall is pretty good. I would recommend this to the people that likes thin teas or don't really want a strong matcha taste in a latte.

This matcha is pretty nice for the price point! I reallt liked the notes on here—my favorite is tasting the umami and the mellow chocolate note that you can taste upon sipping through an usucha!

A great everyday matcha

This is an affordable and delicious matcha. I got this one and tennouzan which costs more yet this one was better and didn’t have any bitterness. I like iced matchas on some days and hot matchas on other days.I can’t wait to purchase the bigger tin when it becomes available

My favourite matcha!!

It is a balanced matcha with no astringency. I will say it is too light for me as someone who likes stronger matcha but a part from that, it's delicious. I don't think that there is much of a nutty flavour and it's closer to the sweet side!!

Great

I really like this one from this brand! It has a subtle chocolatey taste and works really nice in a latte with oat milk. You can really taste the flavors if you use 4g!

Great matcha just not for me

It’s good but was just not for me. It’s light in flavour and no astringency.

Tasted slightly bitter to me but I enjoyed the taste.

Like all matcha from this brand, this was a great blend. I’m not great with the matcha terminology but I can say as a newer matcha drinker this was not grassy or astringent but did pack the perfect punch and stood up to my oatmilk.

this is the first MK matcha powder that i have tried. the flavor has a umami bitterness with a bit of astringency, when made as an iced matcha latte, the bitterness and astringency is still present throughout the drink. the flavor kinda gives a kick. personally, i wouldn’t use this alone but i would mix this matcha powder with other matcha powders if i want my iced matcha a little stronger. i am not sure how it tastes hot, but i will definitely try that :) i will also be purchasing other matcha powders from this brand as well :)

One of the best matchas

This matcha is not nutty nor umami which I like because it maintains the sweeter matcha flavour. I will say though it is quite light so if you're a regular matcha drinker, you may have to add a lot of powder so I would suggest you to buy a bigger size. It tastes best cold whisked!

Amazing!

Matcha is my go to caffeine drink as I don't drink coffee. I love the taste from cafes but the matcha I buy in the US don't compare. This matcha is smooth, not bitter and bright green. I can't go back to regular matcha now. Matcha from Japan is the way to go! Highly recommend. If you want a cafe quality matcha daily.

I recently ordered some of this matcha, and it arrived in just 5 days—talk about speedy delivery! The color is a gorgeous, vibrant green, and the flavor is absolutely perfect—smooth and rich with just the right amount of sweetness. Plus, the price is unbeatable. Buying in bulk was the best decision; it’s cost-effective and ensures I never run out of my new favorite tea. If you’re a matcha lover, this is the way to go!
